AC Service Guide: When to Service, What It Costs, and Why It Matters

20 February 20265 min read

Regular AC servicing isn't just about comfort — it directly impacts your electricity bill, the air quality in your home, and the lifespan of the unit. Yet most people only call a technician when the AC stops cooling altogether. Here's what you need to know about keeping your AC in top shape.

How Often Should You Service Your AC?

  • Residential use — At least twice a year: once before summer (March–April) and once after monsoon (September–October).
  • Heavy use (12+ hours/day) — Every 3–4 months during peak season.
  • Commercial/office use — Monthly or quarterly depending on usage and environment.

What Does an AC Service Include?

A standard service visit covers:

  1. Filter cleaning — Dust-clogged filters reduce airflow and cooling efficiency by up to 15%.
  2. Evaporator and condenser coil cleaning — Dirty coils make the compressor work harder, increasing power consumption.
  3. Drain line check — Blocked drain lines cause water leakage inside the room.
  4. Refrigerant level check — Low gas levels are the most common reason for poor cooling.
  5. Electrical connections — Checking capacitors, wiring, and thermostat calibration.
  6. Fan and blower check — Ensuring proper airflow and no unusual noise.

AC Service Costs in India

Service TypePrice Range
Basic service (filter + coil cleaning)₹400–₹800
Deep cleaning (jet wash)₹800–₹1,500
Gas refilling (R32/R410A)₹1,500–₹3,000
PCB repair₹2,000–₹5,000
Compressor replacement₹5,000–₹12,000
Complete annual maintenance contract₹2,000–₹4,000

Signs Your AC Needs Immediate Attention

  • Warm air from vents — Usually a gas leak or compressor issue.
  • Water dripping indoors — Blocked drain or frozen coil.
  • Unusual noises — Grinding or squealing indicates a fan or bearing problem.
  • Bad smell — Mould or bacteria buildup in the indoor unit.
  • Frequent cycling — The AC turns on and off rapidly, usually a thermostat or electrical issue.
  • Electricity bill spike — A struggling AC consumes 20–40% more power than a serviced one.

DIY Maintenance Between Services

You can do these yourself to keep your AC running efficiently:

  • Clean the air filter every 2 weeks during summer — most split AC filters are washable.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear — Remove leaves, debris, and ensure 1-foot clearance around it.
  • Run the AC in fan mode for 10 minutes after turning off cooling to dry the coils and prevent mould.
  • Set temperature to 24°C — Every degree below 24 increases energy consumption by 6%.

Split AC vs Window AC Servicing

  • Split AC requires servicing of both indoor and outdoor units. The indoor unit is usually accessible, but the outdoor unit may need ladder access.
  • Window AC is a single unit and generally easier to service. The entire unit can be pulled out for a thorough cleaning.

Both types benefit from annual deep cleaning (jet wash), which removes hardened dust and mould that regular cleaning can't reach.
